Believe it or not, I’m walking on air.

american-hero-symbol.jpgI’ve always been a superhero geek, so its no suprised that when I was a kid I enjoyed watching The Greatest American Hero.  Much like another 80s tv show, Automan, I’m afraid to go back and watch the original episodes because I’m sure its radioactive craptonium, despite fondly remembering it and digging on the concept.

It looks like others want to revisit the concept as there is apparently a big screen adaptation coming.  I think its something you could have a lot of fun with if you approach it the right way.  Hopefully the story changes a bit from what’s mentioned in that rumor article, I’m not sure if I like another teacher being the big bad, but who knows.  I’ll just keep my fingers crossed it doesn’t become a turdfest.

The secret to getting a lot of hits on your blog

So, apparently, to get a shit load of hits on your blog you need a popular afternoon radio show to mention something you mentioned once on your blog and is among the top three hits.  My server was having a nice little load and traffic spike as a result.

My unique visitors just today are half the number of last month’s.  And one page got 810 hits in just 45 minutes.   For my little dumbass blog that’s mostly become twitter spew, that’s pretty good.  I’ve now reconfigured the web server to not load spike like this again.

Where’s Santa?

reindeerevan.jpgGone are the days of radio updates of where Santa is, now we can get REAL-TIME on your fat-man tracking ass.

First, you can visit NORAD’s web site for tracking Santa that is in 5 languages and features a map that updates every few minutes. Second, they have a link to a kml file for Google Earth so you can track Santa in 3D. I had fun with my daughter this morning showing her the difference of where we are vs where Santa is right now using Google Earth.

Not following Santa, but fun just the same… For those of us around Chicago, if you’re jonesing for some Holiday lights check out Chicagoloand Christmas Lights. Its main feature is a color coded Google map of 216+ well decorated houses around the Chicago area.

The more things change, the more they stay the same

The Blues Brothers cover of Green Onions came on my iPod while I was driving the other day.  I have always liked the tune and it remains one I’ll always listen to.  In the middle of the Blue Brothers cover is a monologue by Dan Aykroyd (aka Elwood) that seems relevant 30 years later if you change a word or two.   First, about the music:

This is, of course, the Green Onions tune. It was a very big hit in the early sixties in this country. And ofcourse it was composed and recorded in Memphis, Tennessee, right here in the United States Of America. You know, people, I believe that this tune can be acquinted with the great classical music around the world.

Now you go to Germany, you’ve got your Bach, your Beethoven, your Brahms… Here in America you’ve got your Fred McDowell, your Irving Berlin, your Glenn Miller, and your Booker T & The MG’s, people. Another example of the great contributions in music and culture that this country has made around the world.

And then the political part:

And as you look around the world today, you see this country spurned.  You see backs turned on this country…

I’ve got something to say to the State Department. I say Take that archaic Monroe Doctrine, and that Marshall Plan that says we’re supposed to police force the world, and throw ’em out! Let’s stay home for the next ten years people! Right here in North America and enjoy the music and culture that is ours.

I’m not sure where I’m going with this, but it hit me, and it hasn’t left me for a few days.  So, to summarize:

  • the blues: all American and awesome
  • bombing the shit out of most of the world: all American and not awesome

Everything I needed to learn in life I learned from Pop songs

waffle_house.jpgThe Bloodhound Gang was right, getting your Waffle House hash browns smothered1 and covered2 is the way to go. (See The Bad Touch.)

In any case, being in Nashville this weekend has allowed me to go to a Waffle House sober for the first time. Since I am a big fan of greasy food, I loved it. And it was very much like I remembered, but I don’t know if I remember ever eating the food there. I’m sure I did, but I just don’t remember. Alcohol could be helping there too.

Here’s a picture of the grill in action, for no reason at all.

The Gyro Melt

cndgyros1a.jpgAfter weeks of telling me that I should go, I finally gave into Liz’s demands and tried out the gyro melt at CND Gyros at 205 E. Grand Ave. Basically, it was a patty melt (which is NOTHING like a cheeseburger, Ian!) with gyro meat. It may be one of the best things I’ve had all month.

True, I’m not getting out much, but it was pretty damn good. It is now dangerous for me to have the knowledge of the gyro melt, as I now crave it and it will cause me to gain the weight.
